In 2003, we organized a public demonstration of computer controlled closed circuit rebreathers (CCRs) within the Giant Ocean Tank at the New England Aquarium.
CCRs are gas recyclers, which allow very deep and long dives to be carried out more safely than with other diving methods. For example, our programs in the Bahama Deep have taken us to alien environments that are more than 4 x’s the depth of conventional scuba to collect new species of marine life that provide clues into fighting cancer and other human disease.
At the time of the NEAq demonstration, CCR use was only at its infancy within the scientific community. Our public event shed light on this critical enabling technology, which has since become a much more frequently utilized tool for science and exploration.
