“What if the crisis of 2008 represents something more fundamental than a recession, and 2008 was when we hit the wall — when Mother Nature and the market both said: “No more.”
-Thomas Friedman, New York Times

I was so pleased to read these words in a recent NY Times op-ed by one of my favorite authors, Thomas Friedman. They are so true. Americans have created an unsustainable social and economic state of being, and this reign is quickly approaching an end. What will it take to make change? The solutions might be so radical that they are never immediately embraced and a major crash of all US economic, environmental, and social platforms then require rebuilding from square one.

This is both scary, and an opportunity.

For environmentalists, and ocean advocates, we have an opportunity to be heard with open minds as ‘the old ways’ just didn’t seem to work. Banding together, we can make change, and have a responsibility to follow our visions for a cleaner Blue Planet through to the end.

The inevitable is a greater dependence on, and interaction with, the ocean. Just as all civilizations grew their roots along bodies of water, the pieces are beginning to fall into place to take that synergy even further and intertwining life in the sea.

It’s only a matter of time.
